So, How Do Writers Make Money by Working Online?
How do writers actually earn money? Well, it’s true that it’s rare for writers to earn a paycheck in the way that traditional employees might. With that said, most employers are working to pay their employees by direct deposit.
Considering that, the way you get paid as a writer probably isn’t different from the way you get paid now.
Whether you’re working for a local business or a national corporation, most companies pay remote workers using one or more of the following methods:
- Direct Deposit
How often you’ll get paid will vary by which companies you work for. Generally speaking, most companies pay their writers either once a week or once every two weeks. It’s possible to find companies that even pay their writers twice per week.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, other businesses might pay their writers once per month. These factors all depend on the company or companies you’re writing for.
You can also make money writing fiction for profit. Fiction writing as a career can be a great way to start earning more money.
Are There Websites That Pay You to Write Articles?
OK, now it’s time to get to the real meat of this post. I’m here to help you learn how to write articles for money. Let’s start learning about where you can go to get paid to write articles.
I’m happy to let you know that there are many companies ready to pay the right people to write content for them.
I can’t tell you how many times I recommend that new writers avoid getting picky about finding first gigs. Does this mean you should work for free? No. But, it does mean that you need to be working more for the experience than a fat paycheck (or direct deposit).
Let’s take a look at some great websites that offer their writers fair pay.
Best Websites for Writers to Make Money in 2022
I want to quickly note that this is not an extensive list of every single company that hires writers. But, it’s a list of some of the best sources I’ve personally used to earn money from home.
Unfortunately, not every writing job is not all it’s cracked up to be. Certain companies lure in people willing to write with low pay and daunting tasks.
Just because I’ve written for a few of those jerks in the past means you will never have to. The list below details actual sources I’ve used to earn a full-time income writing online. Enjoy and start earning!
First, let me say that I’m not sponsored by this company. From personal experience, I can tell you that this is one of the best writing websites to make money.
It costs nothing to join this website (something you’ll see for all my picks). Joining TextBroker is simple and fast. Within an hour or so, you can begin working. Here’s a recent pic of how much I’ve been earning here, and this is only from part-time work.
TextBroker pays its authors once or twice a week (cashing out twice a week will cost you a $1 charge) by Payoneer. It uses a tiered-rating system, meaning higher rated authors earn more than those with a lower rating.
Fortunately, Textbroker also offers a forum and many helpful tips for learning how to become a better writer and increase your 1-5 star level. They also offer some pretty cool perks.
What’s also cool about Textbroker happens after you keep using it and get comfortable with teams, you can get paid fast. Give it time, find the right teams or order providers and you’ll write and get paid instantly here.
I always love writing for Textbroker’s many groups because it’s a great way to earn money as a freelance writer. If possible, try to find groups without a ton of freelance writers on them.
It’s not bad to join crowded groups, but it could be a feeding frenzy when work becomes available. If your one of a group’s star writers, you’ll be making money online like a pro.
There is also a lot of freelance writing gigs on this platform, meaning you get paid to write lists, stories, and just about everything else you could think of. With Textbroker, you truly get paid to write about what you love.
One of my favorite parts about writing for TextBroker is that you choose the topics you write about. This isn’t always something that you’ll be able to find. I could write a small book about all of the fun and interesting topics I’ve written about here.
To make things simple, here’s a look at several popular writing categories TextBroker offers:
Business & Economy: I’ve certainly spent a lot of time writing articles or posts in this category. This can include writing about companies from all walks of life as well as topics having to do with the economy. If you enjoy writing about certain kinds of businesses, you can find a lot of profitable work to do here.
Cars & Transportation: While this isn’t one of my favorite topics to write about, this is the perfect section for automobile, motorcycle, and other types of vehicle enthusiasts. A lot of these topics will be written for automobile dealerships throughout the world.
Computer & Software: If you’re a fan of all things technical, you’ll love writing about these types of topics. These can include explaining software, hardware and other aspects of computing. Personally, I enjoy writing about these topics. But, I’m also someone who’s spent most of my life working with computers.
Entertainment: This is another fun topic and one with many websites for writers to earn money writing on. There’s always something going on in the world of entertainment. If you enjoy writing about celebrity news, movies, music, and similar topics, you’ll love TextBroker’s entertainment section.
Health & Medicine: Are you a fitness fanatic? Maybe you’re just someone who enjoys staying healthy. If you find fitness and health topics interesting, you’ll want to check this section out. Whether it’s writing about supplements, working out, or something similar, there’s always a lot to write about here and a great way to make money online.
Problogger Job Board
I can’t say enough good things about visiting job boards for writing work. I’ve already mentioned a few of these boards in the past. If you don’t want to check it out, that’s cool, the ones I enjoy most and find the most work from are Problogger Job Board and Freelance Writing Gigs.
Both of these websites are free to use. Just browse or search each of these website’s lists of part-time, full-time, and other types of offers. Some will require you to submit an application on their respective websites.
Most will require a resume and samples of writing work. If you don’t have a sample of your work published on a website, try submitting something new.
I won’t lie, be prepared to receive your fair share of rejections after applying for freelance writing jobs.
Don’t let that discourage you!
The only way I became a successful freelance writer was by getting through wave after wave of rejection letters.
It’s not just freelance writers that go through getting rejection emails – it’s everyone.
It’s difficult to talk about earning money online without talking about microwork or microjob websites. These websites pay you a standard sum of money (typically $5 or $10) to complete a certain task.
In the beginning, Fiverr wasn’t exactly the best source of income. How do I know, because I actually spent the early portion of my time earning money online here. During the mid-2010s, most gigs paid, as you can probably guess, $5. Needless to say, I had to make sure I completed gigs that I could do easily and quickly.
I would also say that Fiverr is a great way to make money writing fiction online. If you can find someone that will pay, it’s possible to make a living writing short stories on Fiverr.
Why do I think that Fiverr is still a great way to earn money online? For one reason, the pay for workers has improved. You can still earn $5 for each gig you complete. However, Fiverr now offers many more types of payment levels for writings.
As you can see in the image above, this can mean earning anywhere from $5-195 for your work.
As anyone with experience earning money online will tell you, it takes time before you’re earning anywhere close to $195 per assignment. To get to this level, you’ll need experience and a history of satisfied clients. Fortunately, you can get this by starting out on Fiverr.
You don’t have to limit yourself to writing. If there’s something you can do and you need to get paid to write, Fiverr is one of the best websites to earn money writing online (and doing lots of other things).
You can learn more about Fiverr and start earning now by clicking here.
Another great place to earn money with freelance writing is on Upwork. This website works with thousands of businesses from around the world. It’s a great place that gives writers the freedom to write about almost anything they want.
Unlike other websites, Upwork allows you to make money writing by using a bid system. You set the price you’re wanting to earn per project or per hour. Therefore, Upwork gives you the freedom to earn as much as you want. However, I’ll be honest, Upwork’s bidding system does take a little time and effort to figure out.
If you want a way to get paid to write short stories, Upwork might be something worth checking out.
Many freelance writers create content for online publications by using iWriter. iWriter is a platform that will pay freelance writers to deliver quality content.
The types of content you might write on iWriter depend on what client you’re working with. Some clients might want guest posts and others might need your help writing blogs. Other clients might want your help with creative writing projects.
The way that iWriter will hire writers is similar to Textbroker. At first, you’ll start out at a certain star level. As you continue creating quality articles, you’ll receive a higher rating. This higher rating will put you in a group of more experienced freelance writers.
As you progress throughout iWriter, more quality writing jobs will become available. If you enjoy freelance writing, it’s definitely worth your time to check out iWriter.
7 Ways to Get Your Freelance Writing Career Off the Ground
Now that you’ve learned about how and where to make money online, I wanted to share tips that I’ve learned from experience. By following these tips, it will help you to maximize your earnings. It’s time to learn how to make money writing articles.
1. Send Lots of Applications
While working from home allows you to avoid a lot of the drawbacks of traditional work. You won’t have to deal with a morning commute, crazy drivers, and being away from home all day (or night).
With that said, succeeding at this type of career isn’t for the lazy. If you want succeed at learning how to make money from home, get ready to send out lots of applications.
Much like finding a traditional job, succeeding while making money online requires sending in lots of applications. Like, “make this your hobby” levels of dedication to succeed.
Fortunately, there are many sites that pay writers of all skill levels. By using these websites, you can start making a living writing.
No matter whether you’re a beginner or quite experienced, it’s always a good idea to be open to new opportunities. You never know when saying “yes” to something could lead to a new side hustle or truly amazing things in the near future.
2. Manually Proofread Your Work, Every Time
This is a mistake that’s easy for more experienced writers to make. More often than not, new writers spend lots of time manually going over their work, which is an excellent trait to have.
Unfortunately, many writers begin to feel a strong sense of self-confidence as they continue to make money from home.
After completing various writing projects, you’ll understandably begin to feel more confident in your work. However, this confidence sometimes means you’re tempted to avoid manually reading another article. If the error checkers said there was nothing wrong, you’ll be tempted to submit that piece of writing. STOP!
Remember that automatic checkers including Grammarly and HemingwayApp work great, but if there’s no misspellings or obvious errors, these might be missed. For instance, let’s look at the word books. There’s nothing wrong with this world until we place it in a sentence where the word book needs to be used.
Example: Sally read a books to pass the time.
In this example, book is the correct word since this sentence indicates Sally is reading a book and not several or many books.
Certain grammar checkers might spot this mistake, but don’t count on it.
Remember: Most editors love writers who are also great error-checkers. Checking your own work manually is one of the best content creation tips I can give you.
3. Use the Right Tools as a Freelance Writer
It’s exciting to be in charge of writing content. However, you should never feel like you’re on your own before submitting your next article. Fortunately, there are several types of error-checking websites that every writer should use.
One of the best and most well-known ways to check your writing is by using Grammarly. I use this app every single time I’m preparing to submit content. The main part of Grammarly’s service is free to use and works fast. When you’re writing for money, this tool helps you turn in accurate content.
While using the free plan, you’ll notice that Grammarly will find additional errors. Throughout my experience as a writer, these were errors that my editors and QA workers also pointed out. Considering that, it wasn’t long before I figured I would try out Grammarly’s Premium option.
Grammarly Premium delves deeper into your writing, automatically spotting errors that are easy for many writers to miss. This Premium service works in the same way as Grammarly’s free service, automatically providing you with ways to correct your errors. You’ll find that this makes proofreading a breeze, especially for those writing on a full-time basis.
If you’re wanting to earn a full-time income by creating content, it’s definitely worth it to purchase the Grammarly Premium service. This service can be billed monthly, quarterly, or yearly.
If you purchase a monthly plan, as of this writing, it costs only $29 per month. If you’re writing on a full-time basis, this service more than pays for itself after only after a few hours of writing.
There’s also the option of purchasing Grammarly Premium on a quarterly basis. By doing this, you’ll pay $59.95, meaning this service would cost $19.98 a month.
For additional savings, you can make a one-time purchase of $139.95 to have this service for an entire year, lowering the per-month cost of Grammarly Premium to only $11.66 per month.
It’s important to ensure you’re doing everything possible to submit error-free content, especially while you’re submitting first-time pieces for a potential job opportunity.
If it means spending a little more of your earnings to create error-free writing, I think it’s an incredibly small price to pay for job security and the potential for new writing opportunities in the future.
Another tool that I can’t recommend enough is the Hemingway App. You’ve likely heard of this famous writer Ernest Hemingway, one of the most influential writers of our time.
I honestly have no idea why this website bears this writer’s name. But, this website was recommended to me during my time spent writing for a major marketing company.
Since I received this recommendation, I use this website on an almost daily basis.
After visiting hemingwayapp.com, you simply copy and paste your writing into this website’s main window. This website works to spot and help you correct: passive voice, extensive adverb use, the ability to determine the complexity of your sentences, and much more!
If you’re anything like me, especially during my early stages as a writer, you probably heard about the importance of NOT using passive voice. Fortunately, the Hemingway App works to spot any instances of passive voice, helping to break many writers from avoiding these types of errors.
4. Design Your Own Website
One of the most important things writers want to see is proof you’re able to do what you say you can. However, not every writer has experience. If you’re in this situation, it might seem discouraging to keep going. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this problem.
For around $10 you can purchase a website. Use this place as a way to practice/show off your writing skills to the world. Best of all, this website makes a great portfolio that shows potential clients what you’re capable of. You can also start a blog for free on WordPress to show off your skills as a content writer.
If you enjoy designing websites, you might find that this becomes another great way to make money from home. Making money from home often means thinking outside the box. With that said, a little creative thinking can take you far in this world.
Don’t worry – you don’t need to be a technical wizard to have a website that shows off your writing skills! What’s great about having a website is the freedom to show off whatever you’d like.
Many freelance writers like to also have a page where they showcase who they’ve worked with or are working with now.
I recommend putting your best foot forward and showcase articles you’re the most proud of. This content could be links to guest blogging you’ve done in the past or content you wrote for another business.
5. Feedback Makes Your Writing Skills Stronger
Companies need to keep an eye on the work of their writers, as they would with any other position. This means that, as a writer, you’ll need to expect to receive feedback in one way or another.
If you’re anything like me, it’s a bit difficult to receive this feedback. However, learning about the mistakes you’re making is a great thing! This is one of the best ways to become a better writer at a rapid rate. Using the feedback you receive to improve also drastically helps if you’re working on finding a job quickly.
As a way to help me, I like to keep a spare document opened while I write with my latest feedback attached. In turn, this makes it easy for me to keep an eye on mistakes that I might have otherwise forgotten about.
6. Build Your Portfolio
If you’re looking for something free, I recommend checking out clippings.me. This website allows you to build an attractive looking portfolio in a matter of minutes.
The only drawback of this website’s free service is that you can post a maximum of, as the time of this writing, seven items in your portfolio. Building a portfolio is one of the best ways to help you with how to make money from home.
Again, I also recommend purchasing a domain name for the purpose of having a way to showcase all of your writings. After all, most clients want to know a writer they’re hiring has an extensive history of providing quality content.
If you’re hosting your own website, you can show your work off in any way you want! For instance, you can view my portfolio on this website by clicking here.
7. Knowing When to “Trim the Fat”
This can be a great thing, as it means you’re taking on enough work to have, or come close to having, a full-time income. Considering that, you’ll want to keep in mind that being a writer sometimes means dealing with burnout.
A few common signs of burnout include:
- constant exhaustion
- being quick to get angry
- a change in sleeping patterns
- lack of appetite
Another great way of learning which clients to put less effort towards is by figuring out who’s paying the most. If you’re dealing with, consider taking a personal or mental health day. It’s easy to ignore common signs of burnout, especially if you’re trying to earn a living as your own boss.
This often means placing immense pressure on yourself to succeed. To avoid this, it’s also a good idea to find hobbies you enjoy outside of your home.
Burnout is a serious matter. To see a complete list of burnout signs as well as resources to help you avoid this condition, MayoClinic has a great write-up about this subject.
You’ve probably seen lots of postings or websites all about teaching you how to make money from home in 2022. I’ve been doing this for about 10 years, building up a great list of sites along the way.
I’ve got plenty of helpful tips for you to check out and start earning with. Best of all, most of these ways to get paid can easily be done in your spare time.
Make money writing online in 2022 with these 13 sources
I don’t want to waste your time, so let’s get right into this massive list. For each pick, I’ll provide more information including how much you can expect to earn per month with most of these methods. I’ll also share my personal experience (or lack thereof) with each one.
Want to make money online? Let’s get started!
1. Transcribe audio data to text
Do you consider yourself a fast typist? Are you someone that’s good at clearly understanding others? If either of these is true, you might have a profitable future in the world of transcription.
Transcribing means listening to what others are saying and transforming it into text. Instead of writing based on ideas you create, transcribing strictly involves typing what you hear.
A great example of transcription work is creating subtitles for movies and television shows. Another example is listening to an audio interview and transcribing it to text for others to read.
This is another way to make money online that I’ve tried in the past. If you’re able to type in a fast and accurate manner, this is one of the best work from home jobs you can find.
Considering the wide range of work and hours available for this process, it’s easy for many to get started with one of these writing jobs. It’s also great for busy people, like college students.
It’s also a good idea to have a pair of decent quality headphones. Take it from me, if you don’t live in a quiet household, make sure to purchase a pair of high-quality headphones!
There are a few online transcription tools which are free. One popular tool is called OTranscribe, and it’s both open-source and free. This simple yet powerful tool lets you listen to audio and enter text in the same, lightweight window.
Another one of the most popular tools for transcribers is The FTW Transcriber. While it’s free, this tool is a high end source of help for busy transcribers working for a business.
As far as how much you’ll earn per month goes, you can expect to earn an income of about $15-30 per hour or $30,000-60,000 per year. Many people get paid to write by working in the data entry field, especially those who can type fairly fast.
As you can see, it’s possible to earn hundreds or thousands per month by working as a Data Entry Specialist. If you get fast and accurate enough, you can bring in lots of earnings in this profession.
Keep in mind that, due to the nature of the work, most types of transcription work are paid on a per word basis and not hourly. This is why it helps to be fast and accurate to earn a nice amount of money working from home transcribing.
2. Start affiliate marketing
If you asked many people about great ways to make money at home, they might mention affiliate marketing. Working as an affiliate marketer means being able to sell products or services to people online, typically through a blog.
With enough time and effort, affiliate marketing can bring you in a lot of income.
One of the greatest ways to make money online is through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing where someone sends leads to a company in various stages of the buying process.
If the lead completes a certain action (making a purchase, providing information, etc), the affiliate receives a reward. This reward often comes in the form of money.
If you learn how to sell products online, you can become great at this professions. Become a top affiliate and you could earn a lot of income each month – maybe even each week!
What’s great about this type of work is that there’s no real cap on your earnings. If you use the right tools and create lots of successful websites, you can operate a successful marketing business.
How does affiliate marketing help you get paid to write? It helps to start by assessing what you’re interested in and might enjoy marketing to other people. Let’s say that you love laptop computers. Here’s how the affiliate marketing process would look like for you:
- Create a website that’s about laptop computers
- Write content that’s about laptop computers
- Place affiliate links on your website that go to laptop computer retailers
- After a customer clicks one of your affiliate links and makes a purchase, you receive money. (Typically via PayPal)
Of course, this is a simplified process that I’m using for example purposes. Take it from someone who got started as an affiliate marketer, it takes time and effort to start seeing profits here.
Also, you’ll often need to do a bit of spending (at least $15 for a domain and hosting) to get started. For those with time and patience, this kind of marketing has infinite income scaling potential.
What do you need to get started with affiliate marketing?
- A domain
- Website hosting for your new domain
- Affiliate companies to partner with
- Advertising costs (SEO/PPC/Social Media)
If you’re using this form of marketing as one of many legitimate ways to earn an online income, it’s helpful to have some tools on hand. With the right tools, you can achieve serious results in this field.
This kind of marketing has to be one of my all-time favorite ways to make money online. If you need money right now, I’d recommend waiting until your situation stabilizes to become an affiliate.
However, when you have the time and a bit of income to create a website, it can be a way to earn unlimited income.
3. Do proofreading/editing work
If you consider yourself to be someone with a sharp eye and a good sense of detail, you could be a great proofreader or editor.
It’s understandable to wonder what the difference is between the two of these types of work. Proofreaders and editors read over something to make sure it is correct. To do this, they must watch out for grammar errors, flow problems, and filler content.
Almost everyone wants to have content that looks great before it’s posted, including everyone from lawyers to real estate agents.
There are generally two main types of proofreaders, which are either technical or non-technical jobs. If you’re a non-technical proofreader, you’ll proofread and edits blogs, magazines, and books. Technical proofreaders work with transcripts, business documents, and other types of technical materials.
With so many companies creating content at a rapid rate, there’s a large demand for qualified proofreaders. If a business posts any kind of written word, it’s going to need a proofreader.
To succeed at this type of work it’s essential to have good reading, editing, and grammar skills. The average income you can expect to earn working from home as an editor or proofreader ranges from $25,000-75,000 per year.
Get partnered up with a high end business and you earnings could be much more than the previously mentioned salary range.
4. Write content for businesses
Now, more than ever, companies of all sizes need content for websites, social media pages, and other digital properties. If you are someone that loves writing content, it’s possible that you’re who these people and companies are looking for.
One of the questions I’m most often asked about this topic is: Do I need a writing degree to write content online? The answer is no.
Where do you start writing content online? Fortunately, there are lots of places. As you would do to find any type of job, it’s hard to go wrong with a major job-hunting site like Indeed and CareerBuilder.
These websites typically post all sorts of opportunities, from side gigs to full-time work. Best of all, most job websites are free to join!
Writing content online for other companies is a way that I’ve received earnings for a number of years. There are even several major clients that I work for at the time of writing this. Trust me, it’s one of the best ways to make money from home fast.
Average income estimates for content writers/marketers ranges from $20,000-200,000+ per year. Again, how much of an income you’ll earn depends on your experience, skill level, and how much time you have for writing purposes.
If you want to learn how to make money as a freelance writer, here are a few quick tips:
Turn in Lots of Applications
If you want to succeed in almost any type of work, you need to get your name out in the world before the earnings start rolling in. To do this, you’ll need to turn in applications to any business that needs a writer. During this apply to companies posting job openings and anything else on popular job-hunting sites.
Create an application that’s relevant to the job you want, and begin posting them. I recommend using a platform like Indeed to start finding writing jobs and getting your applications submitted. If you’re after freelance work, check out Upwork.
Create a Portfolio
It would be great to be able to jump right into making money from home online as a writer. However, most companies are going to want to see what you can do. To do this, they’ll typically ask for one or a few samples of your writing.
If you spend some time working on a few pieces, you can place them in an online portfolio. Or, you can start a blog to showcase your writing talents.
Some of the best money making side gigs came from having a portfolio handy to show. With so many helpful (and free) online tools, it’s easier than ever to create a stunning online portfolio.
Get Better With Feedback
You’ll quickly develop your own style of writing. Take it from me, when you’re starting out as a writer, you’re going to get feedback. While it isn’t fun to hear what needs to be improved, trust me when I say that it’s going to make you a better writer.
The more you write, the more incredibly valuable feedback you’ll receive. Make notes of what you need to work on and put it into action, you’ll be amazed at how fast your writing skills improve.
It’s also important to use free tools like Grammarly and Hemingway App to have help checking your writing.
Always Proofread Your Work
It’s great to be confident with what you write. Just make sure you’re always proofreading your work. You can start this process by using popular proofreaders like Grammarly.
However, make sure that you always take time to manually proofread everything you write before turning it in. I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me from turning in a final piece that contains errors, not good!
Distribute Your Content Online
Another tip that I can’t recommend enough for earning income online is to distribute your content. I recommend using sites like Medium for content distribution purposes.
At first, you won’t earn money for your submissions until you become a Medium partner. However, with enough readers, you could make some nice earnings on this platform. With a little effort, writing content on Medium can pay off.
5. Create your own blog
Do you have topics that you could speak (or write) about in your free time? If you do, it’s a good idea to think about creating content for a website of your own. As I can vouch for, one of the most legitimate ways to make money online is to start your own blog.
Considering that you’re going to be writing your own content, you’re not going to start out with a huge audience. And that’s perfectly OK. You might find that you’re soon able to make a new company with the sales your content drives.
Having written content to show others is also great when you’re trying to land those first few freelance jobs!
One of the best tips I’ve found for creating content is to choose multiple platforms. If you have a website, place your content there and on social media pages.
It’s also possible to re-purpose your written content into online videos, the possibilities are almost endless. The key to success here is choosing the topics you’re going to write about. Take it from me, writing about something you have no interest in gets boring fast.
To have a platform for your content, you’re going to need a domain name and hosting. After purchasing these two items, you can get started designing and writing content on your website.
Having your own website also works well for portfolio purposes, I’ve used several of mine in portfolios of the past.
When it comes to salary figures, the sky is the limit. As it is with being an affiliate, it will take time and effort. There’s also no guarantee that you’ll earn much of anything. At least, not at first. However, I can tell you from experience to push past those doubts and you can make it.
A decade ago, the thought of making money online sounded like a pipe dream. Now, it’s not hard to find digital marketers making six to seven figures a year. In the early stages, having your own blog isn’t the best way to make money.
You might not get paid from your blog for a few months, so use my other tips to make extra money in the meantime.
As a bonus tip, you can make a lot of money if you’re good at creating video content. Feel like you need to learn more before starting a YouTube channel? That’s ok, there are plenty of online tutoring videos to help you get started and eventually get paid. Soon, that cash will arrive to you!
6. Flip websites
If you’ve been spending lots of time indoors, you’ve probably spent at least a few minutes checking out HGTV or a similar channel. Many home improvement channels create and air popular programs in which people “flip” homes.
For those who love the process of flipping something but either aren’t able to or don’t want to buy an actual home, consider flipping websites. While the earnings might not be as much as you’d receive from selling a home, you can earn quite a bit after you sell a flipped website.
The process behind flipping websites is relatively simple. You purchase a website that you consider valuable and then re-design and update this domain and sell it to another person or business. After you collect your payment, they own a new website and you get paid.
With all of that said, the income you’ll make flipping websites depends on how well you’re able to assess the value of a domain. Fortunately, there is a wide range of online tools to help you out. A few online tools I use are Ahrefs and Domcop.
The better you get with website flipping, the more possibility you have to increase how much you earn per month. It’s completely possible to turn this into a profitable online business.
The average website flipper could easily earn a couple thousand per month with the right sites. You can have websites that stand out and are worth even more money if they have great content. By writing articles on websites you’re flipping, they’ll become even more valuable.
Getting back on track, here are a few tips to follow when you’re flipping websites.
Research Every Domain
Considering that domains could range in price from $5-$500,000, it’s a must to research any domain you’re going to buy or bid on. This will take some time and effort, but there are several tools that can make this process a little easier like Ahrefs or SEMRush (both paid tools).
Use a Spreadsheet to Record Your Data
As you begin researching domains to purchase, take it from me that you can start building up important data quickly. To avoid writer’s cramp from scribbling on sheets of paper, I recommend that you create a spreadsheet to help you manage all of this information.
You don’t need to buy an expensive version of Microsoft Excel to achieve this goal. Create something great by using a few of my favorite online spreadsheet creation tools, including OpenOffice and Airtable. Both are free and let offer many options to help you create something perfect.
Never Sell Online to Someone You Don’t Trust
I don’t want this to scare you away from selling domains. There are many major companies that have tools to prevent anyone from being scammed.
I’m saying you might run into this problem if you try and sell a domain privately. Unless it’s someone you completely trust, stick with a service like GoDaddy Auctions, Flippa, or a trusted broker to sell your domain.
Also, make sure that you’re looking at these important domain metrics:
- Amount of backlinks
- Quality of backlinks
- Authority (Trust/Citation Flow or Domain/URL Rating)
- Indexed in search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo)
7. Type up product descriptions
Chances are, you’ve seen product descriptions online everywhere. Before you purchase almost anything, someone has written a short and catchy description for it.
This description is a way to sell the product to a potential buyer with words. Here’s the catch: you typically have anywhere from 50-250 words to get your point across. However, it’s one of the best ways for writers to earn money online.
Sites like Walmart, Amazon, and other retailers all have one thing in common: they all need content for online readers. If you want to earn money online, this is great news for you!
At first, what you could earn by writing a single product descriptions probably won’t sound impressive. In most cases, each description will pay you a few dollars of income. The key with success regarding writing these assignments is working fast.
At first, many new writers avoid writing product descriptions because it takes a while to complete such a short assignment. However, speaking from experience, I’m telling you to stick with it.
As you continue writing these, you’ll become more comfortable and this will mean completing each description faster.
8. Enter the gig economy
It’s completely understandable if you’re looking at your phone or monitor and wondering “what’s a gig economy?” The gig economy was a term given to describe the popularity of people performing freelance “gigs” or jobs.
Sometimes, finding a job quickly is difficult. During this time, consider creating gigs to earn extra money.
One of the best parts of the gig economy is that you can do almost anything to start making money online. Check out websites like Fiverr, WeWork, and others to become a part of the gig economy.
9. Help teach others a new language
Another awesome way to learn how to get money online is by teaching others your native language. If your native language is English, you would want to find job offers from companies needing English speakers.
You don’t need to visit these people in person to start teaching them your language. All you should need is a stable internet connection and the ability to be available when a company needs you to teach.
With so many available opportunities for translator, it should be easy to make this a new part or full time job. It’s possible for online tutoring to earn you anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per month.
Your income will depend on what company you’re working for and how much experience you have in this field.
10. Consider becoming a translator
While you’re thinking about teaching others how to speak your language, you might also consider becoming a translator.
A translator is someone who typically listens to people in one language, translates it into another one, and repeats the new information and language to another party.
For instance, if you speak Spanish and English, you could help facilitate conversations between English and Spanish-speaking communities.
Understandably, learning a new language probably isn’t going to be something you have time to do. However, for those who know one or several languages, this is a great way to earn money from home.
Translating is now becoming one of the most popular make money from home jobs. It can also be an extremely profitable side hustle. Who knows? You might even turn online translating from a side hustle into a business of your own.
11. Teach other people skills you know
Chances are, there are many things that you can do well. With that in mind, why not teach others your skills and make money at the same time? As it is with the gig economy mentioned earlier, there is almost an unlimited number of things you can teach others to do from home.
To accomplish this goal, consider signing up for one of many popular course creation websites. These websites allow you to create an online course teaching whatever there is a demand for. If you worked in the personal finance industry, you could teach an online course about this.
You can start earning money by making content on sites like Udemy and Skillshare. If you get people to sign up for your online courses, you can start earning a lot of income per month.
People who love getting on the camera might also think about trying online tutoring through YouTube. With enough subscribers, you can monetize your YouTube channel.
With so many online course websites out there, I’m sure you can sell yourself to them and get paid by teaching other people what you know.
12. Get paid to post social media content
Who doesn’t spend at least a little time each day on social media? You might know a popular social media platform like:
Keep in mind that you don’t have to have millions of followers to get started doing this type of work. Companies of all sizes are looking to partner with a large number of people on social media, regardless of their follower counts.
It could become a great path to get you started on your way to becoming a master of influencer marketing. The key to success for using social media to make extra money involves having a following. Without a large following, you might not earn a lot per month.
To start earning a decent amount of money per month, it’s advised to apply for social media-related job openings. With even one good part-time gig, you could earn $300-500 per week or a little over $1,000 per month. A full-time job in this field can easily provide you with $1,500-$3,500 per month.
13. Start Guest Blogging
You might be wondering how guest posting will get you more online writing jobs. Admittedly, that does sound strange. But hear me out.
After you checked out writing job boards and sent in your applications, why should you try and create guest posts in the meantime?
One benefit of guest posting is that it usually gets freelance writers in front of a larger audience. And there’s almost nothing better for a freelance writer than getting a lot of people to see their content.
Find a blog or website that aligns with your preferred writing niche. By doing this, you’ll have a much better chance of getting the green light to start writing.
For example: let’s say that you specialize in writing about marketing. Your guests posts would be more helpful to people on a digital marketing blog than a website about motorcycles.
To succeed at finding writing jobs, you’ll need writing samples and a good resume. But, this pays off if you’re willing to put in a little bit of work.
