So, How Do Writers Make Money Writing Online?

How do writers actually earn money? Well, it’s true that it’s rare for writers to earn a paycheck in the way that traditional employees might. With that said, most employers are working to pay their employees by direct deposit. Considering that, the way you get paid as a writer probably isn’t different from the way you get paid now.

Whether you’re working for a local business or a national corporation, most companies pay remote workers using one or more of the following methods:

  • PayPal
  • Direct Deposit
  • Payoneer

How often you’ll get paid will vary by which companies you work for. Generally speaking, most companies pay their writers either once a week or once every two weeks. It’s possible to find companies that even pay their writers twice per week. On the opposite end of the spectrum, other businesses might pay their writers once per month. These factors all depend on the company or companies you’re writing for.

Best Websites for Writers to Make Money in 2020

I want to quickly note that this is not an extensive list of every single company that hires writers. But, it’s a list of some of the best sources I’ve personally used to earn money from home. Unfortunately, not every writing job is not all it’s cracked up to be. Certain companies lure in people willing to write with low pay and daunting tasks. Just because I’ve written for a few of those jerks in the past means you will never have to. The list below details actual sources I’ve used to earn a full-time income writing online. Enjoy and start earning!

1. TextBroker

First, let me say that I’m not sponsored by this company. From personal experience, I can tell you that this is one of the best writing websites to make money. It costs nothing to join this website (something you’ll see for all my picks). Joining TextBroker is simple and fast. Within an hour or so, you can begin working. Here’s a recent pic of how much I’ve been earning here, and this is only from part-time work. I can’t recommend TextBroker as one of the greatest websites for writers to earn money with. TextBroker pays its authors once or twice a week (cashing out twice a week will cost you a $1 charge) by Payoneer. It uses a tiered-rating system, meaning higher rated authors earn more than those with a lower rating. Fortunately, Textbroker offers a forum and many helpful tips for learning how to become a better writer and increase your 1-5 star level. They also offer some pretty cool perks.

One of my favorite parts about writing for TextBroker is that you choose the topics you write about. This isn’t always something that you’ll be able to find. I could write a small book about all of the fun and interesting topics I’ve written about here. To make things simple, here’s a look at several popular writing categories TextBroker offers:

Business & Economy: I’ve certainly spent a lot of time writing articles or posts in this category. This can include writing about companies from all walks of life as well as topics having to do with the economy. If you enjoy writing about certain kinds of businesses, you can find a lot of profitable work to do here.

Cars & Transportation: While this isn’t one of my favorite topics to write about, this is the perfect section for automobile, motorcycle, and other types of vehicle enthusiasts. A lot of these topics will be written for automobile dealerships throughout the world.

Computer & Software: If you’re a fan of all things technical, you’ll love writing about these types of topics. These can include explaining software, hardware and other aspects of computing. Personally, I enjoy writing about these topics. But, I’m also someone who’s spent most of my life working with computers.

Entertainment: This is another fun topic and one with many websites for writers to earn money writing on. There’s always something going on in the world of entertainment. If you enjoy writing about celebrity news, movies, music, and similar topics, you’ll love TextBroker’s entertainment section.

Health & Medicine: Are you a fitness fanatic? Maybe you’re just someone who enjoys staying healthy. If you find fitness and health topics interesting, you’ll want to check this section out. Whether it’s writing about supplements, working out, or something similar, there’s always a lot to write about here and a great way to make money writing online.

2. Checking Out Writing Job Boards

I can’t say enough good things about visiting job boards for writing work. I’ve already mentioned a few of these boards in the past. If you don’t want to check it out, that’s cool, the ones I enjoy most and find the most work from are Problogger Job Board and Freelance Writing Gigs.

Both of these websites are free to use. Just browse or search each of these website’s lists of part-time, full-time, and other types of offers. Some will require you to submit an application on their respective websites. Most will require a resume and samples of writing work. If you don’t have a sample of your work published on a website, try submitting something new.

3. Fiverr/PeoplePerHour/GigBucks

It’s difficult to talk about earning money online without talking about microwork or microjob websites. These websites pay you a standard sum of money (typically $5 or $10) to complete a certain task. websites for writers to earn money

(Source: Fiverr)

In the beginning, Fiverr wasn’t exactly the best source of income. How do I know, because I actually spent the early portion of my time earning money online here. During the mid-2010s, most gigs paid, as you can probably guess, $5. Needless to say, I had to make sure I completed gigs that I could do easily and quickly.

Why do I think that Fiverr is still a great way to earn money online? For one reason, the pay for workers has improved. You can still earn $5 for each gig you complete. However, Fiverr now offers many more types of payment levels for writings. As you can see in the image above, this can mean earning anywhere from $5-195 for your work.

As anyone with experience earning money online will tell you, it takes time before you’re earning anywhere close to $195 per assignment. To get to this level, you’ll need experience and a history of satisfied clients. Fortunately, you can get this by starting out on Fiverr.

You don’t have to limit yourself to writing. If there’s something you can do and you need to get paid, Fiverr is one of the best websites to make money writing online (and doing lots of other things).

Note: I also want to include SEOClerks as one of the best websites for writers to earn money.

4. Upwork

Another great place to earn money with freelance writing is on Upwork. This website works with thousands of businesses from around the world. It’s a great place that gives writers the freedom to write about almost anything they want.

Unlike other websites, Upwork allows you to make money writing online by using a bid system. You set the price you’re wanting to earn per project or per hour. Therefore, Upwork gives you the freedom to earn as much as you want. However, I’ll be honest, Upwork’s bidding system does take a little time and effort to figure out.

5 Bonus Tips to Help You Maximize Making Money Writing Online

Now that you’ve learned about how and where to make money writing online, I wanted to share five bonus tips that I’ve learned from experience. By following these tips, it will help you to maximize your earnings.

Tip 1: It’s Tough to Make Money From Home Without Sending Applications

While working from home allows you to avoid a lot of the drawbacks of traditional work. You won’t have to deal with a morning commute, crazy drivers, and being away from home all day (or night). With that said, succeeding at this type of career isn’t for the lazy. If you want succeed at learning how to make money from home, get ready to send out lots of applications.

Much like finding a traditional job, succeeding while making money from home requires sending in lots of applications. Like, “make this your hobby” levels of dedication to succeed. Fortunately, there are many sites that pay writers of all skill levels.

No matter whether you’re a beginner or quite experienced, it’s always a good idea to be open to new opportunities. You never know when saying “yes” to something could lead to a new side hustle or truly amazing things in the near future.

Tip 2: Design Your Own Website

One of the most important things writers want to see is proof you’re able to do what you say you can. However, not every writer has experience. If you’re in this situation, it might seem discouraging to keep going. Fortunately, there’s a solution to this problem.

For around $10 you can purchase a website. Use this place as a way to practice/show off your writing skills to the world. Best of all, this website makes a great portfolio that shows potential clients what you’re capable of. You can also start a blog for free on WordPress to show off your skills as a content writer.

If you enjoy designing websites, you might find that this becomes another great way to make money from home. Making money from home often means thinking outside the box. With that said, a little creative thinking can take you far in this world.

Tip 3: Get Ready for Constructive Criticism

So you want to learn how to make money from home? If so, be prepared to receive edits and criticisms. It might seem difficult to take, especially if you have a rather high opinion of your writing. Something important I’ve learned is that becoming a successful writer involves learning the voice of the company you’re working for.

Throughout my years as a writer, I’ve learned that each of many clients I’ve worked for all want something a little different. Receiving QA scores or feedback is there to help you learn the voice of a company. After doing this, you’ll find that it’s much easier to continue your successful momentum as a writer and make money from home.

The best tip that helps me learn from criticism is to copy and paste the notes I’ve received into a text document. If I’m able to keep these notes in my mins while writing, I’m not going to continue making these mistakes.

After a few months of writing, you’ll be amazed at some of your earlier mistakes.

Tip 4: Build Your Portfolio

If you’re looking for something free, I recommend checking out clippings.me. This website allows you to build an attractive looking portfolio in a matter of minutes. The only drawback of this website’s free service is that you can post a maximum of, as the time of this writing, seven items in your portfolio. Building a portfolio is one of the best ways to help you with how to make money from home.

Again, I also recommend purchasing a domain name for the purpose of having a way to showcase all of your writings. After all, most clients want to know a writer they’re hiring has an extensive history of providing quality content. If you’re hosting your own website, you can show your work off in any way you want! For instance, you can view my portfolio on this website by clicking here. If you’re pressed for time, I also recommend hopping over to something I recently wrote to help you get a job quickly.

Tip 5: Knowing When to “Trim the Fat”

This can be a great thing, as it means you’re taking on enough work to have, or come close to having, a full-time income. Considering that, you’ll want to keep in mind that being a writer sometimes means dealing with burnout.

A few common signs of burnout include:

  • constant exhaustion
  • being quick to get angry
  • a change in sleeping patterns
  • lack of appetite

Another great way of learning which clients to put less effort towards is by figuring out who’s paying the most. If you’re dealing with, consider taking a personal or mental health day. It’s easy to ignore common signs of burnout, especially if you’re trying to earn a living as your own boss.

This often means placing immense pressure on yourself to succeed. To avoid this, it’s also a good idea to find hobbies you enjoy outside of your home.

Burnout is a serious matter. To see a complete list of burnout signs as well as resources to help you avoid this condition, MayoClinic has a great write-up about this subject.

To summarize, it’s understandable to want to learn how to make money writing online. To succeed at finding writing jobs, you’ll need writing samples and a good resume. But, this pays off if you’re willing to put in a little bit of work.
